Marcel is a charming village in Goa, India, known for its scenic beauty, lush greenery, and peaceful atmosphere. Surrounded by captivating landscapes, it offers a tranquil retreat from busy city life. Though small, Marcel provides an authentic glimpse into traditional Goan culture and a serene escape for visitors.
One of the village’s unique traditions is Chikhal Kalo, a festival whose name means “Mud Bath.” This religious event is exclusive to Marcel and takes place annually on the 11th day of the Hindu month of Ashadh at the expansive Devki Krishna temple. The monsoon season turns the temple grounds into muddy terrain, which becomes central to the celebration. Chikhal Kalo honors the deep connection between Goa’s farming community and Mother Earth, blending devotion with enjoyment.
The festival includes lively dancing and traditional games such as chendu fali (similar to cricket) and gilli danda. The slippery mud causes participants to repeatedly fall and get covered in mud, which is an integral part of the ritual. People eagerly embrace this messy tradition with joy.
This year, the Chikhal Kalo Festival is scheduled for July 24th - 26th at the Devki Krishna Temple in Marcel, Goa. The event will feature devotional ceremonies, cultural performances, traditional games, local cuisine, and community bonding.
